Pavia (the ancient Ticinum) is about 35 km from Milan. The old town can be easily explored on foot. Walking along the streets and squares of Pavia, defined in the past the city of hundred towers, you can see the signs and traces of centuries of history, art and culture: d at the time of the Romans to the Middle Ages, from Visconti Sforza to the Renaissance, from Neoclassicism to Liberty. The air of culture that reigns in Pavia also stems from the presence of one of the oldest Italian universities, founded in the sixteenth century.
Visit the church of San Pietro in Ciel d'Oro, a typical example of a Romanesque building, the theater Fraschini, the Basilica of San Michele, one of the most important masterpiece of the Romanesque church of San Teodoro, as well as buildings and classrooms of the old universities.
Also visit the Cathedral, begun in 1488 and ended in the late sixteenth century, the Visconti Castle, the palace Broletto.
Finally, do not miss the Certosa di Pavia, 5 km from the city, built around 1396 by the will of Gian Galeazzo Visconti Duke of Milan.
